If your corporation is associated with Alberta, CloudTax may include an Alberta AT1 Corporate Income Tax Return as part of your corporate tax return. However, not every corporation is required to file an AT1.
If your corporation qualifies for an Alberta AT1 filing exemption, you may still be able to file your federal T2 return through CloudTax without submitting the Alberta AT1.
Why Is CloudTax Asking for an Alberta CAN?
When an Alberta AT1 is included in your return, you may be asked to enter an Alberta Corporate Account Number (CAN).
If your corporation qualifies for an AT1 filing exemption, you may not have an Alberta CAN. This can create confusion when completing your return, particularly if CloudTax is asking for this information before you can proceed.
If you qualify for the exemption and do not have an Alberta CAN, you can:
Enter zeros in the Alberta CAN field.
Select the business nature that most closely matches your corporation.
Continue completing your federal T2 return.
Submit your federal T2 separately.
Do not submit the Alberta AT1 if you are not required to file it.
Will CloudTax Automatically Submit My Alberta AT1 When I File My T2?
No. Submitting your federal T2 does not automatically submit your Alberta AT1.
The federal T2 and Alberta AT1 have separate submission processes in CloudTax.
This means you can proceed with the federal T2 submission without automatically filing the Alberta AT1.
If your corporation qualifies for an Alberta AT1 filing exemption, simply make sure you do not click the submission button for the Alberta AT1.
Do I Need to Remove the AT1 From My CloudTax Return?
No. If the AT1 appears within your CloudTax return, you do not necessarily need to remove the form in order to submit your federal T2.
If you qualify for the Alberta filing exemption, you can leave the AT1 within the return and proceed with your federal submission separately.
The important part is to ensure that you do not separately submit the Alberta AT1.
How Do I Know If My Corporation Is Exempt From Filing an Alberta AT1?
Whether your corporation qualifies for an Alberta corporate income tax filing exemption depends on your corporation's specific circumstances.
CloudTax cannot determine your eligibility for the exemption through software support. You should confirm that your corporation meets the applicable Alberta filing exemption requirements before deciding not to submit an AT1.
Filing Your Federal T2 With CloudTax
If you have confirmed that your corporation does not need to file an Alberta AT1, the process in CloudTax is straightforward:
Federal T2: Complete the return and use the federal submission option to file it.
Alberta AT1: Do not use the separate AT1 submission option if your corporation is exempt from filing.
Submitting one does not automatically submit the other.
