When filing your T2 Corporation Income Tax Return electronically through CloudTax, you generally do not need to upload or submit additional supporting documents to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
Most supporting documents should be kept in your records and provided only if the CRA requests them.
What documents do I need to submit with my T2 return?
When filing electronically, you generally do not need to attach:
Receipts and invoices
Bank statements
Bookkeeping records
Copies of traditional financial statements
Supporting calculations and working papers
Instead, you must complete the applicable T2 schedules and provide the required financial information using the General Index of Financial Information (GIFI).
What about financial statements and Schedule 141?
The CRA requires corporations to report financial information through the applicable GIFI schedules, including:
Schedule 100: Balance Sheet Information
Schedule 125: Income Statement Information
Schedule 141: GIFI Additional Information
You should complete these schedules accurately based on your corporation's financial records.
Important: If notes to the financial statements have been prepared, the CRA generally requires those notes to be included electronically in text format with the T2 transmission. This is different from uploading financial statement PDFs or other supporting documents.
Schedule 141 collects information about the financial statements and their preparation, but completing Schedule 141 does not necessarily replace the requirement to transmit prepared financial statement notes.
When do I need to provide additional documents to the CRA?
The CRA may request supporting documents after reviewing your corporate tax return.
If the CRA requests additional information, you must provide the requested documents according to its instructions and deadlines.
Some elections, forms, and information returns may also have separate filing requirements, even when your T2 return is submitted electronically.
Do I need to upload receipts or financial statements to CloudTax?
No. You generally do not need to upload receipts, invoices, bank statements, or copies of traditional financial statements simply to submit your T2 return through CloudTax.
However, all required tax information must still be accurately reported, and any applicable financial statement note requirements must be satisfied.
We recommend keeping your supporting documentation in case the CRA requests it later.
How long should I keep my supporting documents?
The CRA generally requires corporations to retain their tax records and supporting documents for at least six years, subject to applicable exceptions.
