What can I claim as a moving expense?

If you moved for work, school, or business and your new home is 40 km closer, the CRA lets you deduct certain moving expenses.

Eligible Moving Expenses

You can claim the following reasonable expenses:

  • Transportation and Storage

    • Costs to move household items, furniture, and personal belongings, including packing, hauling, and in-transit storage.

  • Travel Expenses

    • Costs for you and your household to travel to your new residence, including:

      • Gasoline

      • Meals (flat-rate or actual costs with receipts)

      • Temporary lodging en route

  • Temporary Living Expenses

    • Up to 15 days of lodging and meals if you need temporary accommodations during the move.

  • Real Estate and Legal Fees

    • Commission for selling your old home

    • Legal fees related to buying a new home

    • Mortgage penalties for breaking your old mortgage

  • Utility Hookups

    • Fees for disconnecting and reconnecting utilities at your old and new residences.

  • Change of Address Costs

    • Fees for redirecting mail or updating official documents.

Ineligible Moving Expenses

The following expenses cannot be claimed:

  • Costs of renovations or repairs to make your old home sellable

  • Losses from selling your home below market value

  • Costs related to house hunting or viewing properties

  • Expenses reimbursed by your employer or another party

How to Claim Moving Expenses

  • Use the Moving Expenses form in CloudTax to enter your eligible costs

  • Keep receipts for all expenses as the CRA may request documentation
