If you're living outside Canada and filing your Canadian income tax return using CloudTax, you may notice that the address section initially asks you to select a Canadian province or territory.

Don't worry! CloudTax allows you to enter a foreign mailing address, including addresses in countries such as Australia, the United States, India, and the United Kingdom.

Here's how to update your information.

How to Enter a Non-Canadian Address in CloudTax

Step 1: Go to the Personal Info page

Log in to your CloudTax account and navigate to the Personal Info section of your tax return.

Step 2: Select Yes to the Foreign Mailing Address Question

Find the following question: "Do you have a foreign mailing address on file with the Canada Revenue Agency?"

Select Yes.

Step 3: Enter Your Foreign Address

Once you select Yes, CloudTax will allow you to enter a non-Canadian mailing address. Enter your address details as applicable, including your country, city, postal code, and street address.

Step 4: Continue Filing Your Tax Return

After updating your address, continue completing the remaining sections of your tax return.

Can I File a Canadian Tax Return While Living Abroad?

Depending on your Canadian tax residency status and filing circumstances, you may still need to file a Canadian income tax return after moving abroad.

For example, you may need to file a return if you:

  • Left Canada during the tax year and became a non-resident.

  • Earned Canadian-source income after leaving Canada.

  • Need to report income earned before your departure.

  • Have Canadian tax obligations for the year you emigrated.

Important: Entering a foreign mailing address does not automatically change your Canadian tax residency status or confirm that CloudTax supports every non-resident or emigrant filing situation.

If you emigrated from Canada, additional reporting requirements may apply, including Form T1161 or Form T1243, depending on your circumstances. Confirm whether your required forms and filing situation are supported before submitting your return.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I select a country outside Canada in the address section?

If CloudTax is displaying Canadian provinces and territories, return to the Personal Info page and select Yes to the foreign mailing address question. This enables foreign address entry.

Can I use my Australian or US address when filing Canadian taxes?

Yes. CloudTax allows you to enter a foreign mailing address after selecting the appropriate option in the Personal Info section.

Does entering a foreign address make me a non-resident of Canada?

No. Your tax residency status is determined by your circumstances and applicable CRA rules, not simply by the mailing address you enter.

Can I file a departure tax return using CloudTax?

If you left Canada during the tax year, your return may involve additional requirements. Contact CloudTax Support to confirm whether your specific emigrant filing situation and required forms are supported.
