What Does the Canada Caregiver Credit Cover?
The CCC helps offset the costs of caring for a dependent with an impairment.
It replaces several older credits, such as the caregiver and infirm dependant credits.
The credit is non-refundable, meaning it reduces the amount of tax you owe, but doesn’t result in a refund if your taxes are already at zero.
Note: The credit amounts vary depending on the tax year. The credit begins to phase out once the dependant’s net income exceeds a certain threshold
The CCC Replaced Multiple Older Credits
The Canada Caregiver Credit combines and replaces three former credits:
The caregiver credit
The infirm dependant credit
The family caregiver benefit
Each of the old credits had different rules. The CCC uses a single set of eligibility rules to simplify things. If you meet the criteria, you qualify—no need to figure out which credit applies.
Who Can Claim the CCC?
You may qualify if you supported someone with a physical or mental impairment, such as:
Your spouse or common-law partner
Your or your spouse’s child, grandchild, parent, grandparent, sibling, uncle, aunt, niece, or nephew
To be eligible:
The dependant must rely on you regularly and consistently for basic needs (food, shelter, etc.)
The impairment must be prolonged, and CRA may request a signed statement from a medical practitioner.
The dependant’s income must be below the phase-out threshold.
You must not be claiming amounts like the Amount for an Eligible Dependant or Spousal Amount unless adjustments are made for the CCC.
Who Cannot Be Claimed for the CCC?
You cannot claim the Canada Caregiver Credit for:
Someone else is already claiming an amount for the same dependant on lines 30300 or 30400 (spouse or eligible dependant amounts). Only one claim per dependant is allowed per household.
You share custody of a child under 18 and can’t agree with the other caregiver on who will make the claim — CRA will deny both if there’s no agreement.
You were the only person making support payments for the child — in most cases, you can’t also claim the CCC for that dependant.
How Do I Claim the CCC in CloudTax?
Go to the Personal Info section of your tax profile
In the Spouse or Dependant information pages answer the questions
CloudTax will calculate the eligible amount and apply it automatically to your return
Why This Matters
The CCC provides tax relief to caregivers supporting loved ones with impairments. It ensures that Canadians providing essential, often unpaid care aren’t overlooked during tax time—and that support is recognized with real financial benefit.
