When it comes to filing taxes as a couple, one of the most common questions we hear is this:

Can spouses file a joint tax return while keeping separate accounts and separate email communications?

It is a fair question. Every household is different, and many couples prefer to keep their financial communication and personal information separate. Let us break down how this works today and what options are available.

How Couple Returns Work Today

In Canada, spouses do not technically file a single joint return. Each individual files their own return, but certain tax credits and benefits are calculated together. Because of this, tax software often treats a couple as a linked return rather than two completely independent filings.

At CloudTax today, a couple return is managed under one email address. This means:

  • One primary account is used for both spouses

  • All communications and notifications go to that single email

  • The spouse’s information is added within the same return flow

This setup works well for many couples, but we understand it does not fit every situation.

What If Spouses Want Separate Emails or Accounts?

Right now, CloudTax does not support linking two separate accounts with different email addresses into one couple return.

If spouses want fully separate accounts, the current workaround is:

  • The EFILER invites the spouse as a separate client

  • The EFILER manually enters the spouse’s information

  • The two returns are prepared independently

However, these returns cannot be electronically linked together inside the platform.

Even if two accounts exist, they will both appear under the EFILER’s client portal, and communications are still managed separately

What Is Coming Next

While this feature is not available today, supporting couple returns with separate accounts and emails is something we have added to our product roadmap for future brainstorming and exploration.
