If you're filing taxes for the first time, you may want to set up a CRA My Account to track your return, check your refund status, and manage your tax information online. However, before you can register, you must first file your tax return and wait for your Notice of Assessment (NOA) from the CRA.
Step 1: File Your Taxes

Step 2: Wait for Your CRA Notice of Assessment (NOA)
After filing, CRA will assess your tax return and send your Notice of Assessment (NOA).
📬 For first-time filers, the NOA is sent by mail to the address on your tax return.
🕒 This process can take 4–6 weeks after filing.
Once you receive your physical NOA, you can proceed with registering for CRA My Account.
Step 3: Register for CRA My Account
Once you receive your NOA, follow these steps to register:
1️⃣ Go to CRA My Account
2️⃣ Choose how to sign in:
Sign-In Partner (through online banking)
CRA User ID and Password (if creating a new account)
3️⃣ Enter your personal details, including your SIN
4️⃣ Verify your identity using a line number from your NOA (see next section)
5️⃣ Enter the CRA security code (mailed to you within 5–10 business days)
Step 4: Where to Find Your CRA Verification Line Number
To verify your identity, CRA will ask for a specific line number from your NOA.
💡 For first-time filers, this information will be available on the REVIEW page in CloudTax.
Step 5: How Will You Receive Your Tax Refund?
Once your return is processed, your refund will be issued as follows:
1. If You Filed via NETFILE (Self-Filing Online)
If you haven’t set up direct deposit, CRA will mail you a cheque.
If you have direct deposit, the refund will be automatically deposited into your bank account.
2. If You Filed via EFILE (Through CloudTax or a Tax Preparer)
If you updated your direct deposit information, CRA will deposit your refund automatically.
If you did not update direct deposit, CRA will send a cheque by mail.
